Sustainable Agricultural Production

Introduction

The “Sustainable Agricultural Production” course was launched in April 2008 as a cooperation course with the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO), Kyushu Okinawa Agricultural Research Center. Technology development based on agricultural production environment is essential for appropriate management, maintenance, and improvement of agricultural production. Presently, it is imperative that human resource in research in the field of agriculture is increased. In the cooperation course, researches have been conducted on (i) characterization of the diversity and function of biological and non-biological factors in agricultural production environment, (ii) rational fertilization and soil management for sustainable agricultural production and effective cropping system for avoidance of continuous cropping obstacles, and (iii) environmental pest and disease managements by using biological control method.

  1. Sustainable crop rotation systems by utilizing crop microorganism interactions and regional bioresources
  2. Utilization of the functions of endophytic diazotrophic bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi in sweet potato or other upland crops
  3. Development of control methods against plant-parasitic nematodes without using nematicides
  4. Identification, geographical distribution, pathogenicity, and development of detection method of plant-parasitic nematodes by using molecular biological approaches
