Research Theme
(1) Creation of novel fused particles at the interface of bionanofibres.
(2) Surface chemical modification of cellulose nanomaterials by environmentally
benign processes.
(3) Structure construction and function creation of cellulosic polysaccharide
membrane materials.
Structures
built by living organisms exhibit excellent properties, which can be attributed
to the hierarchical structure of specific organic (or inorganic) substances
(building blocks) assembled and organised in a specific pattern. Such knowledge
on the correlation between 'structure' and 'function' is a good guidepost
for manufacturing. The Biomaterial Design Laboratory aims to propose a 'design
process' to demonstrate the unique properties of biological materials and
their expression mechanisms as 'materials'. To this end, research and development
focuses on understanding and controlling the surface/interface structures
and physical properties of cellulose and other biomaterials.
