Specially appointed Professor　HIROWATARI, Toshiya (PhD)

Mainly working on the taxonomy and phylogenetic systematics of insects, especially on the moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera). My current interest is to clarify the diversity and biology (e.g. feeding habits) of primitive moths (Microlepidoptera), including leafminers and various groups feeding on bryophyta, lichen, fungi or dead plant material such as bird nests.

Mainly engaged in taxonomic study, phylogenetic analysis, inventory and conservation of the hemipteran family Cicadellidae. Current projects: revisionary studies within several leafhopper subfamilies (Xestocephalinae, Deltocephaliane and Evacanthiinae, etc.); DNA barcoding of Japanese leafhoppers; estimation of species diversity of leafhoppers; effects of climatic change on insects (estimation of distribution range shift of insect pests, Nezara viridula etc., due to global warming).

Mainly conducting taxonomic and phylogenetic studies of leaf-mining moths and chitin and keratin feeding microlepidoptera.
