11th JASID Western Japan Research Meeting

On September 9, 2024, the Hiroshima Branch of the Japan Society for International Development (JASID) held the 11th JASID Western Japan Research Meeting in Biwako-Kusatsu Campus, Ritumeikan University, in collaboration with Ritumeikan University, Kyushu University, and Hiroshima University. This is a great opportunity to promote academic exchange between members and bring together knowledge and experience about development from multiple disciplines, including agriculture, economics, education, public management and health, and rural development.

At the meeting, I had the chance to present my research to a wide audience, including not only researchers and students in animal life science but also plant, forestry, and other scientific fields in agriculture. My report title is “The Distribution of Gap Junction Genes in the Muscles of Livestock Byproducts.” As you know, with the rapidly increasing world’s population and meat consumption, using livestock byproducts effectively to cut down the limited amount of livestock waste as well as finding more sustainable production methods and healthier food supplies such as cultured meat is urgently needed. In this research, focussing on livestock byproducts and animal cells, specifically muscle cells (smooth, skeletal, and cardiac muscle cells in the gizzard, leg, and heart of a 15-day-old chicken embryo, respectively), I aim to test the important role of connexins (Cx – Cx32, Cx39, Cx42, Cx43), which are gap junction gene components, for cell growth in culture by measuring how much their expression level in muscle cells. From then, we can understand the similarities and differences among muscles that lead to the expansion of their effective use, and aim to investigate how they grow and achieve their identity.

To conclude, the JASID provides a platform for me and fellow researchers to present their findings, participate in discussions, and establish professional connections. Such events contribute to the advancement of research and development practices, offering insights into various global concerns and the strategies and solutions established to address them.
