“Co-Hosted Seminars”(April 17, 2017)Global Illegal Logging Issues and Japanese Wood Consumption: Toward Effective Implementation of the Clean Wood Act

The “Act on the Promotion of Distribution and Utilization of Legally Harvested Wood, etc. (Clean Wood Act)” was enacted in May 2016. Detailed regulations (basic policy, ministerial ordinances, and enforcement rules) have been prepared and will finally be enforced in May 2017. There is a growing interest in what exactly is required of companies that handle timber under this law, and whether illegally logged timber will really be eliminated from the market.
This symposium aims to provide an accurate understanding of the new law, including the purpose of enacting the new law, the scope of the subjects and goods covered by the new law, and what is required by the new law. The presentation will also include comparisons with due diligence procedures in the U.S. and Europe. Based on the examples of past efforts by various companies, the roles to be played by each of them in their different positions and the desirable level of their efforts were also discussed in order to ensure effective implementation of the new law to achieve its objectives.
