Recent Research

In order to confront environmental changes such as global warming and sustainably produce food, it is necessary to understand the superior characteristics of crops (plants) themselves, such as their adaptability to the environment and survival strategies, and apply them to the development of crop varieties that can be stably produced and to the improvement of production technologies. In this division, we are working to elucidate the physiological and ecological characteristics of tropical and subtropical crops (mainly yams and rice) that contribute to improved productivity, and to develop cultivation techniques based on these characteristics. In addition, through international joint research with Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries, we are involved in the development of crop varieties adapted to the local environment and the development of high production systems. In the future, we hope to promote tropical crop science research based on cultivation science and return the research results to agriculture in the tropics and subtropics.
