In response to the proliferation of illegal logging in developing countries, developed countries such as Europe, the US and Australia have taken action through regulatory legislation, and there is a growing fear of an influx of illegal timber into Japan. In response, Japan has also begun to implement measures to eliminate illegal timber, such as the Clean Wood Act. In this context, we are conducting research, taking into account the gap between the Clean Wood Act system and the actual operational reality, the incentives for private timber companies to implement measures (including CSR and ESG) and their feasibility, and the perceptions of the general consumers who are the end users.
Also, as a joint project with an environmental NGO, the project has organized seminars and developed guidance on due diligence.
In addition, the project is studying measures for timber distribution in Laos, a timber exporting country in Southeast Asia.
