Various stakeholders in tropical countries approach natural resources with different agendas: “governments trying to manage them,” “companies trying to use them,” “aid agencies and NGOs trying to conserve them,” and “local residents using them on a daily basis. In the interrelationships and balance of power among them, there are various adjustments and conflicts. We are conducting research on these issues using a political ecology approach. Specifically, we focus on the operation of protected area management policies, avoidance of conflicts through community forestry and minority common land tenure, and conflicts between local people and external stakeholders in land and forest use.
