Japan Cell-Ag-READY Dialogue 2025, Nov 13-14, Tokyo
The symposium featured an extensive program covering regulatory science, technological innovation, and science communication, with contributions from leading experts in academia, government, and industry. Regulatory perspectives were provided by representatives of the Consumer Affairs Agency and national research institutes, alongside international specialists in food safety and risk assessment.
Sessions on regulatory science included expert presentations on risk assessment frameworks, safety evaluation of cell-cultured foods, and international regulatory trends, delivered by researchers from institutions such as the National Institute of Health Sciences, Tokyo University of Agriculture, and Nanyang Technological University, as well as regulatory scientists from Europe, the United States, China, Singapore, and Australia.
The program also addressed the development and industrial aspects of cultivated meat, with speakers from organizations including the Good Food Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, University of California, Davis, and Roslin Technologies, discussing topics such as cost reduction, cell selection, product categorization, and commercialization pathways.
Professor Mako Nakamura and Assistant Professor Harsha Prakash actively participated in dedicated sessions focused on communication, public trust, and consumer engagement, with multidisciplinary experts including journalists, consumer communication specialists, policymakers, and producers. These discussions highlighted the importance of transparent information disclosure, effective engagement with media, and responsible communication in the introduction of novel food technologies.
Through this comprehensive program, the symposium provided a balanced view of the scientific, regulatory, industrial, and societal dimensions of cultivated foods, offering valuable context for the Nakamura Laboratory’s research on muscle cell development and cultured meat systems.
